Where Words and Film Combine

74 years ago, the front doors of the Vaska Theatre opened for the first time in Lawton, Oklahoma. Teens at the time came to check out the beauty shop, the tot and teen shop, the drug store and the main event: the theatre (the opening show being of the Western film “Smoky”). The same theatre that continues to be a staple in Lawton’s community over 7 decades later.

You can still find pieces from the very beginning of the building, such as the original 3 sided neon sign that reaches 60-foot into the air. However, thanks to the new owner since 2015, Justin Hackney, the Vaska has received a much deserved facelift. New seats, new paint, new carpet and new systems keep the Vaska running.

Vaska Theatre’s History

Although customers constantly worry about the Vaska selling out for shows, Justin syas that he’s only ever seen the occasion happen a handful of times since he’s been owner. “I’ve only seen this place sell out three times that I can think of, and all three times were since I’ve taken over,” he said. The shadow casting of Friday the 13th (on Friday the 13th in October) and Hocus Pocus being two of the biggest draws.

Memories from the Vaska are captured in some of their VIP area tabletops.

Let That “Sink” In

The word “Vaska” is actually a Swedish word for pan – how that fact ties into this story is beyond us. But one thing we know for certain is that the Vaska has many years left to live. You can celebrate the Vaska’s 74th Anniversary by coming to watch the new “Batman” movie, starring Robert Pattinson. Tickets are available at the door and so is the theatre’s history. So do yourself a favor and visit in person.
