Ready, set, sled – Cameron Hill Snowday!
Cameron Hill Becomes Prime Sledding Hot Spot
When the sun came out, even just for a few hours, a few Lawtonians saw an opportunity to get out and about on Monday, February 15, 2021. A few families, snowboarders, and couples came to sled down the large hill behind Cameron University’s stadium. Some broad equipment meant for the snowy conditions, others just brought a cardboard box.
Although the sun was out, the temperatures were still close to 0 degrees Fahrenheit, which made the experience fun for a little while, but not too long. Everyone came prepared for that, though, with lots of layers, gloves, scarves, and the works. Everyone… except for me, Dani Carson.
I not only went on my first ride, but was also there to witness someone else’s first ride – one of the young boys mentioned in the video above. It’s tough to get past the snow in your face, but I wouldn’t count him completely out of doing it in the future.
I had the chance to speak with a couple who used the day to make it brighter than it had began. The snow is seen as a barrier by most people in Oklahoma – but Autumn and Tristen chose to use the snow to their benefit – something I think we can all learn to do every once in a while.
My Experience
In many years in the past, Cameron Hill was always a hot spot for sledding, but you would never see me out there with them – I was nice and warm at home under piles and piles of blankets. However, when I went to visit with everyone, I was convinced to try the sledding experience for the very first time.
If I could do it again, I absolutely would (I’m sure I could if I really wanted to since the snow doesn’t seem to be going away anytime soon); I would definitely want to come more prepared than I was for the first time. But the excitement of trying something new, along with experiencing it with other families and friends that also enjoyed the ride, made it worth while.
